A weekend getaway to Milwaukee

I surprised David with a weekend getaway for his birthday. All he knew was we were going somewhere without the kids. I had the weekend planned out, packed for him, got him in the car, and headed East.

For a minute he thought we might be going to Chicago, but getting out of the state of Illinois is more our style these days. We headed North and for a split second, I am sure he was wishing we were heading to the Milwaukee airport for somewhere warm. Maybe next time!

We checked into our hotel at the Kimpton Journeyman in the Third Ward neighborhood in downtown Milwaukee. We then headed over to the Well Spa for a couples massage. I highly recommend it! We did the Relax Me massage which is a traditional Swedish massage. The atmosphere in the private suite and massages including therapeutic essential oils was one of the best I have ever had. We enjoyed the glasses of champagne as well.

For dinner, we had reservations downstairs at our hotel at Tre Rivali. It was busy so make sure you have reservations if you are dining on a weekend. The food was delicious! We ended the night at the rooftop bar at our hotel called The Outsider, which overlooked the city. The drink menu was extravagant, I had a Wisconsintini.

Café Benelux

Saturday morning we walked over to Café Benelux for brunch. The restaurant was bustling and had such an exciting atmosphere. They had a variety of blood marys on their menu. We did have to wait about twenty minutes for a table, but with no kids and blood marys from the bar, the wait wasn’t an issue.

The menu included an extensive list of choices. A skillet for him and an omelet for me. Delicious! We ended brunch with another round of drinks before exploring Milwaukee more.

We went to the Public Market and had fun walking around and seeing all the different kinds of foods the venues sold. The bloody mary’s there looked extravagant, HUGE you guys. We should have waited to have one there, they looked like a meal in themselves. After we walked next door to have coffees at Colectivo. Then we wandered farther down and had brews at Wizard Works Brewing Company, which had a friendly atmosphere. Then we went back to our hotel to relax and get ready for the night.

Our hotel offered free happy hour in the eclectic lobby that featured sleek furniture and a comforting fireplace. It was a great place to have a glass of wine and talk about the day so far.

We had dinner at Blue Bat Kitchen and Tequilaria, which had a great view of the river. Delicious Mexican! Homemade chips and a variety of salsas and guacamole are what we started with, followed by a variety of handheld tacos and of course margaritas!

We then adventured over to Pabst Theatre for a comedy show. Tom Papa was the act. I can’t remember the last time we actually were out for a show, it was a fun end to our weekend away!
