Summer Road Trip Last Stop: Louisville
Louisville, KY
After spending time in the mountains we headed north to our last stop on our journey, Louisville, Kentucky. This stop included changing it up by exploring a downtown and staying in a hotel. Previously we had been at a rental house in the Smoky Mountains. We parked the car in the parking garage and didn’t get back in until we left. It was fun to be able to walk to all our destinations. Something we are not used to being able to do.
Arriving at the Embassy Suites hotel, the boys beelined it to swim. Hotel indoor pools are too cold for me! I enjoyed reading on the side. Then we got dressed up and walked to dinner. It was fun exploring the city art and historic architect on our walk.
I had made reservations at Doc Crow’s on Whiskey Row. We did have to wait a few minutes when we arrived, but by the time Dave ordered us both drinks from the bar it was time to go to our table. The restaurant served traditional southern food, we even got the boys to try fried green tomatoes. The shrimp and cheddar grits I had was delicious!
On our way back to the hotel, we stopped at the entertainment district 4th Street Live. This was such a fun area to be across the street from our hotel.
There are restaurants, bars, shops, live music, and an open area with tables to hangout at. The boys got ice cream from The Fudgery and played Big Jenga with some locals.
One advantage of our hotel was the it included breakfast, which was pretty extravagant. There was a made to order omelet station and hot buffet, in addition to the more continental breakfast items. We went to lunch at Mussel and Burger Bar and then went to the Louisville Slugger Museum.
We explored the museum before out scheduled factory tour. The museum consisted of lifelike sculptures of some of the biggest legends in baseball. In addition there were artifacts about the favorite players alongside each sculpture. We all learned a lot!
Next, we made our way to the hands-on-collection where we were able to hold and swing famous baseball players actual bats they used in games.
Finally it was time to head into the bat factory tour. It was interesting to learn about the different types of bats the professional players use and how the bats are made. We saw them being made on our tour! We all ended the tour with a miniature souvenir bat to take home.
After the tour Caden and Dave both hit some balls in the batting cage. This was fun to watch!
Although pretty warm out, we still went on to explore the city walking. We made our way to Louisville Slugger Field were the Louisville Bats play.
Then we headed across the street to Against the Grain Brewery. We sat inside to cool off and have some snacks, and brews for the parents. Then we headed outside to enjoy the beer garden that had yard games for the kids to play. Our boys became Ring Toss game masters after being introduced to this game in the south on our trip.
Then we walked back to our hotel to relax some before we headed out to 4th Street Live for our last night on the town. We kept it simple for dinner and grabbed pizza at Pizza Bar where the kids were able to play a few arcade games.
We had such a great first family road trip experience. We took the gamble that our kids are now at an age where they can travel much easier and they proved us right. We drove 1,890 miles through 8 states! Where to next summer?
